Vintage TOPPING DESK TOP MODEL #1 - WW-II Grumman "HELLCAT" - 1943. In 1942 Bill Topping of Akron, Ohio started a plastic mold manufacturing business making recognition models for the military. By the wars end it had developed into the leading "contract manufacture" (not for public sale) of plastic solid scale display models. Also known as Executive Models and Manufactures Models, that were often give out as Company Awards, Sales Promotions and for Public Relations.
Topping's first display model (1943) is said to be of the Grumman built (over 12K) , carrier based fighters.... The US Navy's , F6-F-3 "Hellcat" with approximately 1,500 models being made. The model we are offering measures : 12 1/2" wing span and 10" long, overall in good condition for over 75 years old. There seems to be no typical warping of the wings, there is a slight bend to the props. It does have typical scratches and a lot of dust. Decals are fair to good.
It has not been cleaned up. It does not have its original base, but does have the 3 original props with the metal spinner. Another unusual item on this model , not common to Topping Models... Is the nose art (decals) on the cowling.
It resembles the US Navy's "Cruiser Scouting Squadron" Insignia, VCS-6 Fish? Scouting Squadrons were assigned to aircraft carriers like the USS Enterprise. (see Midway & Pearl Harbor). Additional information on Topping Models, (now Precise Models LLC) the US Navy's Hellcats and Scouting Squadrons can be found on the internet.
